Out and About – KAWS at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park
If you’re out and about in Yorkshire this weekend or in the following months there’s one place you HAVE to visit to get your daily dose of culture and Nature. KAW’S first ever UK exhibition is now open to the public and it is being shown at The Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
The Brooklyn based artist has exhibited all over the world and collaborated with the likes of Pharell, Kanye and Nike. KAWS works within the Pop Art tradition and is currently considered one of the most important artists of his generation – also engaging young people with contemporary art, and working between the worlds of art and design to include street art, graphic and product design, painting and sculpture.
There are over 20 works being shown, with a mix of large-scale sculptures in bronze, fibreglass, aluminium and wood, and bright canvases immaculately rendered in acrylic paint which are exhibited in the Longside Gallery and outside in the grounds of the park itself. Within the grounds are several looming sculptures drawn from characters such as Pinocchio, Mickey Mouse and children’s clowns, which give rise to ideas of childhood nightmares and the difficulties of growing up.
The unique feature of this exhibition is of course the large-scale sculpture work of KAWS. At up to 10 metres tall, these pieces are larger-than-life giants within the beautiful landscapes, are cartoon-like and yet beautifully rendered. An absolute must-visit, if you can spare a day.
KAWS’ UK exhibition at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Longside Gallery will be on display from February 6 to June 12 2016.
